Choose the SHCA1600.4 When:

Four-Channel, Three-Channel and Bridged Operation

Both Sky High 4-channel amplifiers can be configured in several ways depending on the speaker system.

  • Four-channel operation: Power four separate speaker channels, such as front-left, front-right, rear-left and rear-right.
  • Three-channel operation: Use two channels individually and bridge the remaining pair for a stronger midbass or compatible small subwoofer channel.

Bridging an amplifier combines two channels into one more powerful channel, but it also changes the load seen by the amplifier. Verify the speaker impedance and wiring before connecting the system.

Minimum Speaker Impedance

The SHCA1600.4 and SHCA3000.4 are not designed for 1-ohm stereo operation.

  • Minimum stereo load: 2 ohms per channel
  • Minimum bridged load: 4 ohms per bridged channel pair
  • Do not wire either amplifier to 1 ohm per channel

Connecting several speakers in parallel lowers the final impedance. Calculate the completed load on each channel before powering the amplifier. Wiring below the supported impedance can create excessive heat, distortion, protect-mode problems or amplifier damage.

Build the Speaker System Around the Amplifier

Crossovers help direct the correct frequencies to each speaker type. A properly configured high-pass crossover protects smaller full-range, midrange and tweeter drivers from frequencies they are not designed to reproduce.

Midbass speakers may be used with both high-pass and low-pass filters so they operate within the range intended for the installation. The exact settings depend on the speaker model, amplifier power, door construction, system layout and desired listening level.

Begin with conservative settings and make careful adjustments while listening for distortion, harshness, excessive movement or mechanical stress.

Set Amplifier Gain Correctly

Amplifier gain is used to match the amplifier’s input sensitivity to the signal from the radio, line-output converter or DSP. Gain is not an additional volume or power control.

Excessive gain can cause:

  • Clipping and distortion
