Prodigy Audio NB Series Amplifier Lineup

The current NB Series includes one high-power monoblock amplifier and one high-output 4-channel amplifier:

  • Prodigy Audio NB2800.1: 2,800 watts RMS at 1 ohm monoblock amplifier for subwoofer systems
  • Prodigy Audio NB300.4: 1,200-watt 4-channel amplifier rated for up to 300 watts RMS per channel at 2 ohms

This makes the NB Series useful for builders who want separate amplifiers for the bass and speaker sections of a complete car audio system.

Prodigy Audio NB2800.1 Monoblock Amplifier

The Prodigy Audio NB2800.1 is the dedicated subwoofer amplifier in the NB Series. It is a South Korea-built digital monoblock designed for systems needing substantial RMS power from a relatively compact amplifier.

NB2800.1 RMS Power

  • 800 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
  • 1,800 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms
  • 2,800 watts RMS x 1 at 1 ohm
  • 5,600 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms linked

The NB2800.1 is stable down to a 1-ohm mono load when used as a single amplifier, making it useful for single or multiple-subwoofer systems where the final voice-coil wiring lands at 1 ohm.

1-Ohm Stable Prodigy Monoblock Amplifier

A 1-ohm stable monoblock gives builders flexibility when wiring multiple dual voice-coil subwoofers.

However, the fact that an amplifier can operate at 1 ohm does not mean every subwoofer combination automatically creates a 1-ohm load.

The final impedance depends on:

  • Number of subwoofers
  • Voice-coil impedance
  • Series or parallel wiring
  • How the individual woofers are connected together

Before ordering the amplifier and subs, use our subwoofer wiring diagrams and final ohm-load guide to make sure the completed system lands at the impedance you want.

NB2800.1 for Prodigy Audio Subwoofers

The NB2800.1 can be matched with several different subwoofer configurations depending on the desired RMS power and final load.

Browse our Prodigy Audio subwoofer collection to compare the NB2, shallow-mount NB3 and higher-power NB5 Series.

If you are building around the higher-power NB5 family, pay particular attention to whether you select dual 2-ohm or dual 4-ohm voice coils. That decision determines the final load available to the amplifier.

Prodigy Audio NB300.4 4-Channel Amplifier

The Prodigy Audio NB300.4 is the full-range 4-channel amplifier in the NB Series. It is designed for powerful mids and highs systems, custom doors, pro-audio speakers and other applications that need considerably more output than a typical radio or smaller speaker amplifier can provide.

NB300.4 RMS Power

  • 200 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms
  • 300 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms
  • 600 watts RMS x 2 bridged at 4 ohms

The NB300.4 is stable in 2-ohm stereo operation and 4-ohm bridged configurations.

High-Power 4-Channel Amplifier for Mids & Highs

A 4-channel amplifier like the NB300.4 can be used to build a serious speaker stage instead of asking the factory radio or head unit to power multiple aftermarket speakers.

It can make sense for:

  • Custom door panels
  • High-output mids and highs systems
  • Pro-audio midrange speakers
  • Full-range speakers
  • Multiple speaker pods
  • Motorcycle audio systems
  • Daily drivers where the speakers need to keep up with a strong subwoofer system

Bridge the NB300.4 for More Power

The NB300.4 can also be bridged to produce up to 600 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms.

Bridging combines amplifier channels to provide more power to fewer loads. This can be useful for certain high-power speaker applications, but the final speaker impedance must stay within the amplifier's supported bridged configuration.

Do not bridge channels into an impedance lower than the amplifier is designed to support.

NB300.4 Crossover Controls

The NB300.4 includes adjustable high-pass and low-pass filtering along with a crossover multiplier feature. These controls give installers more flexibility when dividing frequencies between different speaker types.

Proper crossover settings are extremely important when powering mids, midbass speakers and tweeters at higher power levels.

A midrange speaker should not be forced to reproduce deep subwoofer frequencies, and a tweeter needs protection from frequencies below its intended operating range.

For help planning the speaker side of the system, read our car audio speaker tuning guide.

NB2800.1 vs NB300.4

These two amplifiers serve completely different jobs.

Choose the NB2800.1 When:

  • You are powering subwoofers
  • You need a dedicated monoblock amplifier
  • Your subwoofer system can be wired to an appropriate 1-, 2- or 4-ohm load
  • You need up to 2,800 watts RMS at 1 ohm
  • You are building a stronger daily or high-output bass system

Choose the NB300.4 When:

  • You are powering mids and highs
  • You need four amplified speaker channels
  • You are building custom doors or speaker pods
  • You need up to 300 watts RMS per channel at 2 ohms
  • You want the ability to bridge the amplifier into two 4-ohm loads

A complete system can use both amplifiers together: the NB2800.1 for the subwoofers and the NB300.4 for the speaker stage.

Building a Complete NB Series Amplifier System

Using the NB2800.1 and NB300.4 together can provide dedicated amplification for both major sections of a complete car audio system.

A system like this might include:

  • NB2800.1 monoblock amplifier for subwoofers
  • NB300.4 4-channel amplifier for mids and highs
  • Prodigy Audio subwoofers
  • Prodigy Audio speakers or other properly matched speakers
  • A properly designed subwoofer enclosure
  • Heavy power and ground wire
  • Power distribution for multiple amplifiers
  • Individual amplifier fuse protection where appropriate
  • Speaker wire
  • RCA or signal wiring
  • Strong electrical support

When running multiple amplifiers, plan the electrical system around the combined current demand instead of treating each amplifier as if it were the only load in the vehicle.

Use the Correct Amp Wiring

High-power amplifiers need adequate current. The amplifier cannot make the power it is capable of producing if the power and ground wiring becomes the restriction.

Browse car audio amp kits and amplifier wiring kits or shop car audio power, ground and speaker wire when planning your NB Series installation.

Wire size should be selected according to amplifier current demand, conductor material, total run length and whether the system may grow later.

NB2800.1 Electrical Requirements

The NB2800.1 is a serious amplifier. Prodigy lists a 300-amp fuse rating for a single amplifier, which is a clear indication that the electrical side of the system needs to be planned correctly.

A system at this level may require more than simply adding a larger amp kit.

Depending on the vehicle and complete system, electrical upgrades may include:

  • 1/0 gauge or larger power wiring as appropriate for the installation
  • Properly sized amplifier ground wiring
  • Strong battery and chassis grounds
  • A Big 3 charging-system upgrade
  • Additional battery capacity
  • Proper fuse and distribution hardware
  • A high-output alternator when the factory charging system can no longer keep up

Shop car audio Big 3 upgrade kits when improving the vehicle's primary charging and ground paths.

Do Not Ignore Amplifier Grounding

A poor ground can make a good amplifier behave like something is wrong with it.

Grounding problems can contribute to:

  • Voltage drop
  • Weak output
  • Protect mode
  • Excessive heat
  • Electrical noise
  • Unstable amplifier operation

The amplifier ground needs to be properly sized and connected to a clean, dependable grounding point.

Read our car audio amplifier grounding guide before blaming the amplifier for an electrical problem.

Use Proper Fuse Protection

Fuse protection is part of the safety system for high-current car audio wiring.

The main fuse near the battery protects the power cable if it shorts to ground. Multi-amplifier systems may also require proper fused distribution depending on how the wiring is configured.

Browse car audio fuse holders, fuse blocks and power distribution when laying out the electrical system.

Set Amplifier Gain Correctly

Gain is not a volume knob.

Amplifier gain is used to match the input sensitivity of the amplifier to the signal coming from the radio, DSP or line output converter.

Turning gain too high can contribute to clipping, distortion, unnecessary heat and damaged speakers or subwoofers.

That becomes even more important with powerful amplifiers such as the NB2800.1 and NB300.4 because there is enough power available to damage equipment quickly when the system is tuned incorrectly.

Read our guide to setting amplifier gain for subs, mids and highs.

NB2800.1 Bass Knob & System Monitoring

The NB2800.1 includes a remote bass control that provides more than basic level adjustment. The control also monitors important operating information including voltage, amplifier temperature and clipping.

Monitoring system voltage is especially useful in higher-power bass systems because low voltage can quickly affect amplifier performance and increase stress on the charging system.

A clipping indicator can also help show when the amplifier is being pushed beyond the clean signal available from the system.

NB Series Cooling & Protection

High-power amplifiers generate heat, so thermal management is an important part of amplifier design and installation.

The NB Series uses aluminum heatsinks, and the NB2800.1 incorporates active cooling fans for additional thermal management.

Both amplifiers also incorporate protection circuitry intended to help protect against operating problems such as excessive temperature, voltage problems and speaker wiring faults.

Even with protection circuitry, amplifiers still need adequate airflow. Avoid installing an amplifier in a completely sealed space where heat has nowhere to escape.

South Korea-Built Prodigy Audio Amplifiers

The current Prodigy Audio NB Series amplifiers are built in South Korea.

For shoppers specifically looking for Korean-built car audio amplifiers, the NB Series gives Prodigy a full-size monoblock and 4-channel offering within that category.

The NB line should not be confused with Prodigy's compact NBM amplifier family. The main Prodigy Audio amplifier collection allows you to compare both amplifier families.
