Prodigy Audio NB5-8D2 / NB5-8D4 8" 800 Watt RMS Subwoofer is built for shoppers who want a small subwoofer that still brings serious low-end performance, strong motor control, and a more refined design than a basic entry-level woofer. Sold by AudioSellerz.com, this 8" Prodigy Audio subwoofer is part of the NB5 Series and is rated at 800 watts RMS, with available dual 2 ohm and dual 4 ohm voice coil options.
The NB5 Series 8" starts with a stronger motor design than most people expect from a woofer this size. Prodigy says it uses a large inner pole, upper and lower Faraday shorting ring design to help reduce distortion caused by inductance through cone movement, and a 2.50" diameter voice coil with a very long winding width using flat aluminum wire. That matters for shoppers who want bass that stays cleaner and more controlled instead of just being loud for the sake of it.
Prodigy also built this woofer with the kind of parts that help it hold up in real systems. The NB5-8 uses 180 ounces of ferrite motor force, a vented pole design, coil gap radial vents for faster heat removal, a heavy-duty cast aluminum frame, Nomex spiders with heavy stitched-in tinsel leads, a competition grade treated paper cone, carbon fiber dust cap, and a heavy-duty foam surround. The cast frame also helps act as a heat exchanger as the woofer warms up during use.
Excursion is another big selling point here. Prodigy lists the NB5 8" with 17 mm of one-way Xmax at 70% BL, along with 28 mm forward X-mech and 50 mm downward X-mech clearance before soft parts contact hard parts. For an 8" subwoofer, that gives this model a much more serious feel for shoppers building a compact but capable bass setup.
Fitment is also important on a smaller sub like this. Prodigy lists the mounting depth at 6.500", cutout at 7.375", overall diameter at 8.625", and displacement at 0.09 ft3. That gives you a better idea of where it can fit before you start planning the enclosure.
On the T/S side, Prodigy lists separate specs for both coil options. The NB5-8D2 is listed with Re 3.6, Fs 38.77, Vas 6.923, Qes 0.489, Qms 2.512, Qts 0.410, BL 20.23, Mms 164.5 g, Cms 95.517, sensitivity 82.1, and Xmax 17. The NB5-8D4 is listed with Re 6.8, Fs 39.995, Vas 7.21, Qes 0.544, Qms 2.598, Qts 0.450, BL 22.541, Mms 151.33 g, Cms 104.2, sensitivity 84.01, and Xmax 17.
Prodigy also promotes a 5-year discounted trade-in program, a 2 year warranty, and says subwoofers ship free by ground in the US48 states, which adds some extra value around the product.
