Dual 2-Ohm vs Dual 4-Ohm Voice Coils

Choosing between dual 2-ohm and dual 4-ohm voice coils is about wiring flexibility and final impedance—not which version is louder or more powerful.

For one dual-voice-coil subwoofer:

  • A dual 2-ohm subwoofer can normally be wired to a 1-ohm or 4-ohm final load.
  • A dual 4-ohm subwoofer can normally be wired to a 2-ohm or 8-ohm final load.

Using multiple subwoofers creates additional final-load options. Decide how many subwoofers will be used and what impedance the amplifier needs before choosing the voice-coil configuration.

Never connect an amplifier below its minimum rated impedance. A lower load can increase current demand, heat and stress on the amplifier, wiring and electrical system.

The Correct Subwoofer Box Matters

Even a properly powered subwoofer can perform poorly in the wrong enclosure. The box controls how the subwoofer loads, how low it plays, how efficiently it uses amplifier power and how much mechanical control the driver receives.

Before building or ordering a subwoofer box, verify:

  • Recommended net enclosure volume
  • Sealed or ported enclosure requirements
  • Recommended port tuning when applicable
  • Required port area
  • Subwoofer displacement
