Choosing the Right Gold V2 Size

The largest Gold V2 subwoofer is not automatically the best choice. The correct model is the one that fits the vehicle, enclosure space, amplifier, electrical system and intended listening style.

Choose the Gold 10 V2 When:

  • You want serious power handling in a compact diameter.
  • Available enclosure space is limited.
  • You are planning a single or dual 10-inch system.
  • A larger enclosure would sacrifice too much passenger or cargo space.

Choose the Gold 12 V2 When:

  • You want a strong all-around daily-driver size.
  • You have room for the correct 12-inch enclosure.
  • You want a balance of deep bass, output and manageable box size.
  • You are planning a single or dual 12-inch build.

Choose the Gold 15 V2 When:

  • You have enough room for a larger ported enclosure.
  • Deeper bass and increased cone area are priorities.
  • You are building in a large trunk, hatchback or SUV.

Choose the Gold 18 V2 When:

Dual 2-Ohm vs Dual 4-Ohm Gold V2 Subwoofers

Gold V2 subwoofers are available with dual 2-ohm or dual 4-ohm voice coils. The coil configuration controls the final wiring options presented to the amplifier; it does not change the 1,500-watt RMS rating.

One dual 2-ohm Gold V2 subwoofer can normally be wired to:

  • 1 ohm with the coils wired in parallel
  • 4 ohms with the coils wired in series

One dual 4-ohm Gold V2 subwoofer can normally be wired to:

  • 2 ohms with the coils wired in parallel
  • 8 ohms with the coils wired in series

Match the Amplifier to the Gold V2 System

Choose an amplifier according to the combined RMS rating of the subwoofers and the amplifier’s rated output at the completed final impedance.

Before selecting an amplifier, confirm:

  • The number of Gold V2 subwoofers being installed
  • Whether each subwoofer is D2 or D4
  • How the voice coils and subwoofers will be wired
  • The completed final impedance
  • The amplifier’s RMS output at that impedance
  • The amplifier’s minimum stable impedance
  • The required power wire, ground wire and fuse protection
  • Whether the vehicle’s charging system can support the amplifier

One Gold V2 subwoofer is rated for 1,500 watts RMS. Two matching Gold V2 subwoofers provide a combined conservative rating of 3,000 watts RMS. The amplifier should be selected around the completed system rather than the largest number printed on the amplifier.

Use the Correct Gold V2 Subwoofer Box

The enclosure is one of the most important parts of a Gold V2 system. A serious subwoofer in the wrong box can sound weak, peaky or uncontrolled even when the amplifier and electrical system are strong.

The box must account for:

  • The exact Gold V2 subwoofer size
  • The number of subwoofers
  • Recommended net internal volume
  • Port tuning and port area
  • Subwoofer displacement
  • Port and bracing displacement
  • Mounting depth and cutout diameter
  • Available vehicle space and loading direction
  • The amount of amplifier power used

Measure the Vehicle Before Choosing a Size

Measure more than the final resting area of the enclosure. The completed box must also fit through the trunk opening, hatch or vehicle door used to place it inside.

Check:

  • Maximum available enclosure width
  • Maximum available height
  • Maximum available depth
  • Trunk, hatch and door-opening dimensions
  • Seat and interior-panel clearance
  • Space around the port opening
  • Subwoofer cone and surround clearance
  • Room for speaker-wire connections
  • A safe method for securing the enclosure

An 18-inch subwoofer may fit the available floor area but still require too much enclosure volume or fail to pass through the vehicle opening. Choose the model the vehicle can properly support.

Power Wiring and Electrical Support

A Gold V2 system requires properly sized power and ground wiring, secure grounds and correct fuse protection. Electrical needs increase quickly when two or more 1,500-watt RMS subwoofers are installed.

Depending on the amplifier and how the system will be played, additional support may include:

  • Large OFC power and ground wire
  • Multiple cable runs
  • Upgraded fuse holders and distribution blocks
  • A Big 3 wiring upgrade
  • Additional battery capacity
  • A high-output alternator
  • Charging-voltage monitoring

Do not attempt to correct voltage drop by increasing amplifier gain. Wiring, battery capacity and alternator output must be matched to the actual current demand.

Set Gain and Filters Correctly

Amplifier gain matches the amplifier’s input sensitivity to the source signal. It is not an additional volume control.

Excessive gain can produce clipping, heat and damaged voice coils. The low-pass crossover and subsonic filter should also be set around the enclosure design, tuning frequency and intended operating range.
