OFC vs. CCA: Which Big 3 Wiring Should You Buy?
OFC means oxygen-free copper. For a demanding under-hood wiring upgrade, it is the material we prefer when the budget allows. Compared with CCA of the same conductor cross-section and length, copper has lower electrical resistance.
CCA means copper-clad aluminum. It provides a more affordable option, but a 1/0 CCA cable should not be treated as electrically identical to a 1/0 OFC cable. The same gauge label does not make their resistance or suitable current capacity the same.
For larger amplifiers, upgraded charging systems or a build that will receive more power later, compare the Sky High OFC Big 3 kits first. For an appropriately sized budget system, review the Sky High CCA Big 3 options.
Do not choose a smaller conductor or switch to CCA simply because another kit is unavailable. The replacement still needs to meet the vehicle’s electrical requirements.

The manufacturer lists 12 feet of 1/0-gauge OFC wire arranged as three 4-foot runs, with one end pre-terminated, copper ring terminals and heat shrink. The unfinished ends allow the cables to be shortened and terminated for the installation.

Sky High E-Series 1/0 CCA Big 3 Kit
The E-Series 1/0 CCA kit includes three 4-foot cables: one power cable and two ground cables. Sky High lists three terminated ring terminals with heat shrink, three non-terminated ring terminals with heat shrink, and zip ties.

Measure before ordering. Three 4-foot cables do not guarantee a perfect fit in every engine bay. Check all three routes, terminal requirements and any additional installation supplies your vehicle needs.
4 Gauge vs. 1/0 Gauge Big 3 Kits
A 4-gauge Big 3 kit can be appropriate for a system whose current requirements and cable lengths fit that conductor. It should not be selected only because the audio system has a single amplifier or because the kit costs less.
A 1/0-gauge Big 3 kit, commonly called a 0-gauge kit, uses a larger conductor size. It is a sensible direction to evaluate for higher-current charging systems and builds with substantial future upgrades.
Wire material, under-hood temperature, run length, connections and actual current demand all affect the final choice. Some installations require larger cable, additional runs or a custom wiring plan beyond a standard kit.
What Does a Big 3 Upgrade Actually Do?
A Big 3 upgrade strengthens three main charging and grounding connections:
- Alternator positive to battery positive: the charging-current path.
- Battery negative to chassis: the main battery ground connection.
- Engine block to chassis: the connection between the engine and the vehicle’s ground system.
Improving restrictive cables or weak connections can help reduce voltage loss. However, a Big 3 kit does not create extra alternator output, repair a failing battery or guarantee that dimming lights and amplifier shutdowns will disappear.

Pairing a Sky High Big 3 Kit With a High-Output Alternator
When installing a high-output alternator, plan the charging and ground wiring as part of the same job. Do not assume the original cables can safely carry the increased current.
For a Brand X alternator installation, include the required Big 3 wiring upgrade in your build plan. Match the conductor capacity and routing to the exact alternator and vehicle instructions rather than selecting a kit from amplifier wattage alone.
Compare high-output alternators when the charging system itself needs more capacity. Better wiring and additional alternator output solve different problems; one does not automatically replace the other.
A Big 3 Kit Is Not an Amplifier Wiring Kit
The Big 3 handles the vehicle’s main charging and grounding paths. An amplifier wiring kit supplies the wiring used to connect the amplifier to the electrical system.

Before Ordering Your Big 3 Kit
Check your vehicle year, model and engine; alternator output; battery location; required cable lengths; and terminal sizes. Think about the system you are building next, not only the equipment installed today.
Leave factory wiring and battery-monitoring sensors intact unless the correct vehicle or alternator installation instructions require a change. Follow those instructions for circuit protection, cable routing and charging-system compatibility. Keep wiring away from exhaust heat, sharp edges, belts and moving parts.
High-current vehicle wiring can cause burns, equipment damage or fire if installed incorrectly. Follow the vehicle’s power-disconnection procedure before electrical work and use a qualified installer when needed.
